The pleasure of music
I got a last minute offer/request to help out my acapella friends The Decibelles playing at a charity gig in the Dalriada in Portobello - one of them couldn't make it and they asked if I'd play 15m or so to fill out their set. I said yes before all the usual 'things to do' kicked in and went along. I did my stuff, saw an absolutely superb violin-and-piano duo, whose name I didn't get but the best bit was when Karen and Alison Decibelle and I just went out and sat on a bench by the beach and sang some folk songs in the sunshine. It contrasted so drastically with my recent experience of computer-based recording and editing on the band stuff and my solo album, listening to the same thing over and over again, shifting rectangles around on a screen with a mouse. It just reminded me of the sheer fun of playing without the need for a result or an improvement.
And the best was yet to come - in the car on the way home I started a new song (my best songs appear far from any musical instruments), a sheer pop song somewhere between my style and Sam Barber's - could be a lot of fun to co-write. It easily passed the 'can I remember this when I get home' test so you'll hear it one day soon. (In Norman Lamont recording time, that's possibly seven years, but things change ...)
